PKU Disorder
A genetic disorder that happens when the body cannot properly use phenylalanine which is an amino acid. When the amino acid is not broken down it can cause mental retardation and other serious neurological disorders – this needs to be treated within the first few weeks of being born. This disorder is inherited. The good news is that if this is treated the prognosis is excellent. Tests are performed when the child is born to detect this disorder.
