There can be many concerns when taking different psychiatric medications when dealing with bipolar disorder. One concern may be that the medications can alter your personality. The medications will have the change effect for most people, but in a positive way. The medications can reduce the problems that come with the bipolar mood swings. Being on the medication will allow you to maintain a more stable and positive personality. It can be noticeable for the person who is taking the medication as they could be used to the associated mood swings. There can be the temptation to lower the doctor’s prescribed dosages. The reason you may want to lower your dosage is not because you want to experience depressed moods, but to have the feeling from the mild mania common with bipolar disorder. Adjusting your dosage without the direction from your doctor can be dangerous.

The side effects of medication may be another reason you might consider changing your dosage. This can also be a dangerous reason to adjust your dosage on your own. The doctor needs to be the person that provides direction in adjusted medicines. Several of the side effect symptoms can be: dry mouth, feeling nauseous, and physical tremors. Your doctor can help with the side effects once they are discovered. Not all people with bipolar disorder have to deal with the same side effects.

The Three Best Treatment Strategies for Bipolar Disorder

Education

The first, and most important, step in treating bipolar disorder is to learn about the illness. There are several areas to focus on with a personal education regarding the disorder – the symptoms, the day-to-day experiences, and discovering the existence of other mental health issues.

Medical Treatments

With the help of a doctor you can find the balance of medications that will work to help manage the symptoms of the disorder. The mix will usually involve a combination of antidepressants and anti mania drugs. These can include: Depakote, Trileptal, Zyprexa, and Lamictal. The doctor may also recommend Prozac. The doctor will discuss the side effects of these medications.

Psychotherapy

The use of psychotherapy will help prevent a relapse of the disorder’s symptoms. This, combined with the medical treatment is the standard way of treating the symptoms of Bipolar Disorder.

A first visit to the doctor should include a record of your personal experiences, as well as your family history in relation to mental disorders.

Bipolar disorder is a recurring disorder that can often continue if it is not treated or understood. The treatment for the disorder is also a life-long process. There are many problems that can occur when there is no treatment for the bipolar disorder. Learning is one of the best ways to help a person through their diagnosis and treatment.

Since the bipolar disorder can affect more than just the person who has the disorder understanding the illness is key.

The disorder can be misdiagnosed, and therefore not treated. If you are seriously concerned about someone who has bipolar disorder it is important that you learn all you can.

Many people with Bipolar disorder are on doctor prescribed medications. Often, the person with Bipolar disorder, or any other mental disorder, will sometimes feel they want to try going off their medication. Unfortunately, this does not always turn out well.

Knowing that Bipolar Disorder cannot just go away after taking medications. Depending on the phase of the disorder the person can feel they are getting better, or even cured, with their Bipolar Disorder. If you are in a relationship and your partner is Bipolar you need to know when these decisions are made regarding medications. Going off medications without a doctor’s approval can lead to many interpersonal problems in a relationship. This is especially true when a partner does not let the other person know their decision regarding medications.

As a partner in a relationship you may want to set guidelines as to how you feel about the other person going without medical treatment for their mental illness. The decision to go off medications can affect their lives, as well as the people in their lives.

Sometimes behavioral extremes are signs someone is bipolar. This does NOT always indicate the person is bipolar, so it is recommended that a doctor be consulted if you have concerns.

Some of the most common behavioral patterns include the following:

High Energy/Low Energy - The person is always active, mentally and physically, and then drops to having no energy or motivation. This can occur over the period of several weeks, or several days.

Talkative/Silent – The person will always have something to say to nearly anyone, and then not want to talk to anyone about anything.

Positive Thinking/Negative Thoughts – The person will feel like anything is possible, and that everything will go their way, to thinking they shouldn’t bother to try anything because they believe they will always fail.

Often, the person who experiences these extremes will not think anything is wrong. Getting someone to seek medical advice is often difficult, so it is recommended that you learn more about Bipolar Disorder, or read about experiences of others, which may encourage the person to finally seek medical advice and treatment.

It is easy to confuse Bipolar Disorder symptoms with Type A personality. Many people will see the personal actions as ‘normal’ when there could have a very serious medical condition. There are some similarities in both of these descriptions, but when is it a medical condition and not a personality type?

A Type A personality is the type of person who has high energy, an outgoing personality, and highly motivated to succeed. A person with Bipolar Disorder will show these traits when in a manic state of their disorder.

To many observers of a person in a manic state will just be seen as the Type A personality and not a serious mental condition.

With Bipolar Disorder the person will usually have extreme highs and extreme lows. Sometimes a person seen with both of these differences will be though to have ‘burned themselves out’ from pushing themselves too hard. Even the person themselves will think that they push themselves too hard and sink into a state of self-doubt.

It takes a professional doctor to determine if Bipolar Disorder is present. Learning the key signs and symptoms is the first step in determining if medical attention is needed.
