Autistic Child Unwilling to Participate in Daily Living Activities
This can be an issue for many children with Autism – The refusal to participate in general daily activities such as bathing or brushing teeth.
To help guide you child with these activities it may be best to make the activity more enjoyable as the child will want to participate if the task is enjoyed.
Try the activities when the child is less busy – rushing to school in the morning may not be the best time to practice this! Once the activities are done during a less stressful time the child may be more willing when it is needed. Show excitement and approval when a child does a particular activity such as brushing his or her teeth. Sometimes this simple reward will encourage a child to do this activity more often. Showing this excitement towards other family members doing the same activity may also show your child that it is fun and exciting.
“Great Job! You’re doing it yourself!”
The child may not want to perform the activities in the order you would do for yourself. Let the progression be relaxed and free flowing.
